After my few years in tea-wilderness, i.e. the USA, it is nice to be back on the side of the world that knows the right way to get its caffeine. I am glad to report that the office has - surprise - classy Earl Grey and about half-a-dozen other teas. Supermarkets stock an immense variety of them. And department stores have entire sections devoted to them. In fact the tea section at Harrods was so overwhelming I became dizzy and ran out. I need venture back, to find a replacement for the special Earl Grey that I a have diminishing quantity of.
Anyway, today I finally had The Afternoon Tea. For those who do not know what it is, you drink vast quantities of tea and eat a variety of baked goods. The rule is that you must imbibe clotted cream with the scones etc, weight for weight. After many sittings, you may be featured on My Half Ton Dad, a riveting TV program.
No, seriously, the afternoon tea was terrific, if expensive and for the first time I had an actual British waiter serve me. Good tea, great little sandwiches and scones. And a lot of clotted cream. A deep inhalation and I might just explode.
