Coming from a musically giifted family, I of course love Mariah Carey.
That was a joke. Mariah is terific wriggling on screen on mute in a skimpy top, and possibly as a weapon against the dengue fever - for only mosquitoes could possibly hear her high notes, and they would of course be immediately repulsed, and head for the nearest rojak stall to die at. (Self-congratulatory snigger)
Anyway, as readers may have noted, I seem to have lost my "edge". Partly, I am trying a new narrative style characterized by contrapuntal sentences and mixing the sensational, the sarcastic and the quotidien; partly because NY will always create a certain state of mind (does anyone even remember that song?); and just a bit because massive quantities of alcohol and large, powerful sunshades were involved.
Anyway, equipped with my wireless headphones from the inimitable Yodobashi in Tokyo (Motto: Weep, Mustafa, Weep), the courage to buy songs from a dubious Russian website for 10 cents a pop, and my faithful phone / "portable music device", I am now in serious music gathering mode. I have Nina (Simone) on repeat; (Louis) Armstrong trumpeting La vie en rose; Dire Straits singing about your latest trick; Daft Punk's been heard many more times than just one; and Alice DJ gyrating her beautiful Dutch torso. Oh wait, that last one is an apparition. A good, non-scary apparition.
The old stereo has been brought out of storage; cables bought to hook up the phone to the amp; liqor cabinet stocked - TWO bottles of Hendricks!! Everyone is invited.
But, let us focus here - remember the mix tape from high school? It was the symbol of undying love, "forever and ever". Snort. Well, I am tempted to make one. Or several.
Bartender! A kamikaze shot please. Or several.

hasn't the i-pod created the infinite playlist? THat makes the mix tape obsolete.
Oh I do mourn its passing.
But to be fair, my mix tapes had more crap in them than real music. My favourite one (when I was 15) had annoying songs by The Offsprings, Eminem, Everclear, Greenday and a couple of Tamil Songs by ARR.
Yes. That makes so much of sense. Or rather, it did back then. Perhaps it was a reflection of the mercurial emotions typical to a teenager.

PS: Thanks for the chilli padi reference. Its the first time someone called me that. People think I'm a nice and gentle type. ;)
The mix tape reference was to do with making a tape for a particular "purpose", and making a fool of yourself in the process. As opposed to recording random songs in a cassette tape for one's own pleasure, which, as you put it, "makes so much sense".
I don't know if you can share a playlist on the ipod. I've never had one.
